Why Buy Organic?
The term ‘organic’ refers to the way that agricultural products are both grown and processed. Since the beginning of 2013 there has been a huge rise in demand for both organic food, and in leading a healthy and well balanced lifestyle. LIV sells a hue range of both organic foods and products.
The Soil Association believe that there is strong scientific evidence to back up the fact that there are clear benefits for those that choose to eat organic foods, and buy organic products.
So why buy organic? There are many reasons for this, including benefits to our health, the environment, and for animal welfare.
By choosing to eat organic foods comes with many health benefits. Organic foods usually contain more beneficial nutrients, for example including antioxidants. Non-organic foods include preservatives and c emicals, which have a strong link to causing illnesses. Due to the fact that organic foods do not include preservatives, means that what you are eating is fresh produce. Organic farms have healthier soils, and foods are grown in these organic soils with natural fertilizers with no harmful chemicals. This makes the food less dangerous to your health, as well as being much more nutritious.
Knowing what’s in your food:
People like to know what has gone into what they are eating, and many non-organic foods include pesticides and chemicals. The Soil Association state that ‘the best way to reduce your exposure to pesticides in all food is to buy organic; certified organic food, including all fruit and vegetables, processed food and dairy and meat products.’ There can be up to 320 pesticides routinely used in non-organic farming. Which is a huge amount comparing to 8 used in organic foods. Avoiding chemicals in food is one of the biggest motivations for customers to purchase organic food.
Benefits to the environment:
Organic food and farming deliver a huge range of public benefits, from less pollution to animal welfare. Organic farming produces food in ways that benefit people, farm animals, society and the environment. Farm animals; Organic standards insist that animals are given much more space, and fresh air to thrive and grow - guaranteeing a truly free range life. They are encouraged to forage and graze, giving them high animal welfare. Animals are also reared without the routine use of drugs, antibiotics and wormers common in intensive livestock farming.
The environment; Organic farming releases less greenhouse gases, and so choosing organic food can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Also, organic farms do not use manufactured chemical fertilisers. Instead of these, they use crop rotation, where they rotate crops and livestock around different fields within the farm on an annual basis.
